CSE offers three documentation systems. Citation-Sequence: References are numbered in the order they appear in text; list is numbered accordingly. Citation-Name: References are alphabetized, then numbered; numbers used in text. Name-Year: References are alphabetized; author-date used in text. Format for journal articles: Author(s). Year. Article title. Journal Abbrev. Volume(Issue):Pages. Use sentence case for titles, abbreviate journal names, and include DOIs when available.
Citation-Sequence: Use superscript numbers¹ or numbers in parentheses (1) in order of first appearance. Citation-Name: Same format but numbers correspond to alphabetized reference list. Name-Year: Use (Author Year) format—e.g., (Smith 2024) or (Smith and Doe 2024). For 3+ authors: (Smith et al. 2024). Choose one system and use it consistently throughout your document.
