FAQ

Questions, answered plainly.

If your question isn't here, send it our way and we'll add it.

Is AllCitations really free?

Yes. The full generator, all 30+ styles, import, and export are free, with no account and no limit. A free account saves one list and syncs it across devices. The optional Pro plan adds unlimited lists, folders, and tags.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Open the generator, cite a source, copy or export the result. Without an account, your bibliography is saved in your browser so it's still there next time you visit. Sign in with your email to save it to your account and open it on any device.

Which citation styles are supported?

30+ styles, including APA 6 and 7, MLA 8 and 9, Chicago (notes and author-date, 17th and 18th editions), Harvard variants, IEEE, Vancouver, AMA 10 and 11, ACS, ASA, Turabian, and CSE. Law styles (Bluebook, OSCOLA, AGLC) and science styles (Nature, APSA, ASM, AIAA) are supported too, along with Deutsche Zitierweise.

How do I generate a citation?

Pick a style, then paste a URL or search by title, DOI, or ISBN. Select a result and the citation is added to your bibliography in the style you chose.

What sources can I cite?

Articles (journal papers, web pages, news articles, blog posts) and books. Paste a URL to fetch metadata from a webpage, search by DOI to find an article, or use an ISBN to locate a book. For offline sources, fill in the fields manually.

Can I edit a citation after it's generated?

Yes. Open any citation in your bibliography to edit authors, dates, titles, page numbers, or any other field. The formatted output updates immediately.

Can I switch styles after building my bibliography?

Yes. Change the citation style at any time and your whole bibliography reformats - no need to re-enter sources.

Does it generate in-text citations too?

Yes. Alongside each reference-list entry, the tool produces the matching in-text citation - for example (Smith, 2024) for author-date styles or a numbered citation for IEEE/Vancouver - and you can copy it with one click.

What formats can I export to?

Per citation, you can download BibTeX (.bib), RIS (.ris), or Word (.docx). You can also copy the full bibliography or any in-text citation directly to your clipboard for pasting into Word, Google Docs, or Pages.

Can I import an existing bibliography from Zotero or Mendeley?

Yes. Drag in a .bib (BibTeX) or .ris file - both are the standard export formats for Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote, and most other reference managers.

Can I organise a long bibliography?

Yes. Sort by author or date, group by source type, and search or filter to find a specific entry. Edits and reorders are saved to your bibliography automatically. With Pro, you can also keep a list per paper, group lists in folders, and tag citations.

Will my bibliography be saved if I close the tab?

Yes. When you are signed out, your bibliography is stored in your browser, so it's still there when you come back, but a different device or browser starts with a fresh list. Sign in to save it to your account and see it on every device.

What do you do with my data?

When you are signed out, your bibliography stays in your browser and we don't store the sources you cite. When you sign in, we store your email and the lists you save so they sync across devices. Payments go through Stripe, and we never see your card number. We don't build a profile on you. Metadata lookups go through our resolver to fetch citation details but aren't kept. Analytics are privacy-friendly with no personal identifiers.
